Podarcis peloponnesiacus
Peloponnesisk Murfirben
Everybody traveling the mediterranean european countries have encountered wall lizards on their trips. But Europe is home to quite a large number of species – and the number seems to increase, as more is learned about these magnificent lacertids.
Lacertids are among my absolute favorite families of lizards, and i also enjoy to photograph these alert and often very fast animals. One of the thinks i have learned over the years, is that, most animals are quite curious, and will come out and will actively stop and watch you if you near them slowly. When they no longer see you as a threat, they will continue with their normal behavior without taking much notice of your presence, which makes an excellent opportunity of observing them for quite a long time.
On Peloponnese, we came across the splendid Podarcis peloponnesiacus – and endemic to so Peloponnese. It was formerly split into three subspecies, but one of these has been synonymized, and the other subspecies has been elevated to a seperate species – Podarcis thais, which is endemic to an area of eastern Peloponnese – which we did not find on this trip.
